About Me:
I'm Leeona Klippstein, the Founder and Executive Director of The Habitat Trust for Wildlife and Spirit of the Sage Council. Everyday I work for the Earth and betterment of all species. My specialty is protecting endangered species and imperiled habitats.

Named, "One of the Most Influencial People" in Pasadena CA., by the Pasadena Weekly Newspaper, Leeona Klippstein has been an invited expert ,by U.S. Congress, Endangered Species Taskforce, to testify on the Endangered Species Act and Habitat Conservation Plans. Leeona has also been on Advisory Committees in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, Multi-Species Habitat Conservation Plans. Known for her no nonsense and ardient opposition to the killing (take and incidental take) of threatrened and endangered species by development, logging and mining companies,

Leeona with Spirit of the Sage Council, has been a national leader in the conservation of endangered species nationwide. Represented by the most accomplished legal experts in Washington, D.C.,on the Endangered Species Act, Meyer, Glitzenstein & Crystal, Spirit of the Sage Council spent over a decade in legally challenged the U.S. Dept of Interior, Fish & Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service weakening of the Endangered Species Act. Known as the "No Surprises" guarantee for private landowners, it reversed the purpose of the Act to guarantee the conservation and recovery of listed species under the law. Sage Council one two out of three of the legal challenges, to "No Surprises" and the intertwined "Permits Revocation" rules, leading to the government agencies creation of the "5-Point Guidelines to Habitat Conservation Planning" to use better science. In addition, stronger language was added to the Permit Revocation Rule, giving the Fish & Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service the ability to REVOKE a Incidental Take Permit, not only if the endangered species survival was jeopardized, but if it's recovery was jeopardized. Endangered species RECOVERY has been the focus and the Sage Council's decade in the federal court did provide improvements.

In 2000, the Spirit of the Sage Council challenged was challenging one more development in Southern California, when they decided that a Land Trust was needed to follow-up on long term conservation of habitat mitigation lands. For nearly ten years, local governments were getting the habitat mitigation lands of development project, but not doing a good job of conserving them. So, a seperate nonprofit Land Conservancy was born, The Habitat Trust for Wildlife.

From 1991- 2000, the Sage Council's opposition and legal challenges to development, led to over 2,000-habitat acres being put into designated conservation preserves. Since 2000, an additional 306-acres have been acquired by The Habitat Trust, given forever conservation easements and placed in Nature Sanctuaries. In 2007, an additional 200-habitat acres are in escrow and will be added to the growing Nature Sanctuaries.
