Envirolink, the host for the Commonwealth (CW) Islands, is all about the use of technology to advance the goals of nonprofit groups and activists. I've been thinking a bit about the ways we might use this site, Second Life, Facebook, Twitter and our individual sites to support or amplify our organizational and activist goals. And, while we're at it, build community. Each of the social networking aps has strengths and none is perfect, but maybe a mash up of sorts would work. Here's what I'm thinking:
1. I'll invite everyone in the SL Commonwealth group list to register here.
2. I invite every member to create your own page and upload a photo. Then use the blog tab to tell us about your activism. If you blog, cross post or link. If you twitter, give us the follow link.
3. I invite members in every resident group to establish a discussion thread (under the forum tag) for your group. If you have a website, link to it. Ditto a FB group. Tell us about your rl and sl goals. Invite the rest of us to chime in with ideas and feedback.
Resident groups pay a monthly fee and have an info kiosk dedicated to their use. Some arrange for sky boxes for special purposes. Let's hear from * Avatar Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) * Code Pink * Eikios (sponsored by the NW Solar Center at WSU) * Fielding Graduate University * Greenpeace UK * Habitat Trust for Wildlife * Organizational Development Learning Group * Peace, Earth & Justice News * Peacemaker Institute * Preferred Familly Healthcare * Prison Dharma Network * Surfrider Foundation * Witness and Virtual Coalition Against Censorship
If you let me know about upcoming SL events for your group; I'll add them to the Commonwealth calendar.
4. Every other week, I'll announce the new content to this site.
Sound worth a try? Let me know what you think.
